Dr. Hirotami T. Imai's checklist of Australian Ants - It's contents are simply images used for taxonomic purposes of various Australian ant species. I believe this checklist will be incorporated into the Japanese Database proper. Right now it lives on Dr. Imai's WebServer. Thanks to Dave for pointing this out.

Myrmecology.org - Java and Non-Java (Frames) - Well organized - One of the preimere sites with a fair amount of ant Information including Colony Founding, foraging, nests, observation, artifical nests - how to build - types, ant anatomy, bibliography/FORMIS, microscopic images, General Info about Ants. Has message board, mail list archive - Egroups, chat room (Java Required), and a lot of links

3

AntColony.org - Java and Non-Java - Well organized - The following information is available: Ants in the News, TV Listings/Events, Photomicrographs, snapshots, a bit of history, Natural Ant Control, and of course a egroups message board. This site predominantly seeks to provide information regarding raising ants. Though many of the links on this site go to other sites listed here. The ones unique to this site are Humidity, Water. They also have a page where you can sell/trade/buy ant colonies as well as a list of locations where you can view a live colony.. If you can't find it there you can check their links as well.

Finally they have some nice articles on

The Ant Farm - Java and Non-Java - Bit hard to navigate - Another site with (correct me if I'm wrong Ant) mostly links to other sites, and general ant fun stuff. I think most people use the Message board to talk about ants. I don't see a lot of locally created information mostly lot of good and Diverselinks. The Chat Room - JAVA REQUIRED is mostly dead. Make a reservation on the message board if you want to talk to Ant. Also the Reading Room - which has tons of links to many ant related items (General, Technical, Extermination/Pest, Ant Games, Ant Farms, Parables, Stores, Poems, & Songs, Sight Seeings, Cartoons, Jokes, Movies, Personal pages). Ant also has a moderate picture gallery. Here is a link with his Site Map.

Checklist of the Ants of Michigan (Hymenoptera:Formicidae) - Java - Non-Java - Seeing as I'm located in Ingham/Clinton County this has a nice list of ants found in various areas in Michigan. Hmmm. Maybe in my hunting I'll get lucky and get to add to this information. No images. Perhaps I will have to fill this one in with some nice images..

Ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) - Java and Non-Java - Has some odd javascript in top page. of Cowling Arboretum and McKnight Prarie. This site is a collection of images and data relating to ant Identification and distribution in the Midwest US region. Generally beyond the fact that this site has some good additions to images of various species the fact it has general info on ant identification as well as collecting makes it interesting and useful.

Project Summary
A list of species in the collection
Primary list and distribution of the ants of Minnesota
Table of species per subfamily per state.
Identification Guide to the ant genera of the Midwest USA
Preparing and Pointing Ants: A Crash Course
Formicidae: key to subfamilies, couplet 1
- this is a nice beginners guide to ant identification.
Identification guide to the ant genera of Minnesota.
Dolichoderinae
Formicinae
Myrmicinae
Ponerinae
Image database of Midwest USA ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) - This is the link to the actual database of iamges. One note I have is that there is no scale in those images and few have other information (size etc.) But this is better than nothing.

3

SOCIAL INSECTS WORLD WIDE WEB - SIWeb - Has a new online image gallery of a number of species. Here is a link to the first database and the second. The first has images and the second various information. I'm still searching this archive.

Ant Farms

1

Build an Ant Habitat. Step-by-step instructions including illustrations. A great poor man/kid's ant farm. I used to build these when I was a kid. Materials required - 1 quart mason jar, Soft drink can, Black construction paper, Tape, Sand, Dirt and ants from an ant hill, A piece of sponge, Food scraps. Nice way to have your own first ant farm really cheap.

2

Build your own Plaster/Gypsum Ant Terrarium (Farm). Step-by-Step instructions including pictures on how to build your own 6"x6"x3/4" Plaster/Gypsum Ant Terrarium (Farm). This is a little more advanced for most kids but with adult help it is doable. Make sure to test your plaster water mix ratio before pouring!! Too thick and it'll harden too fast.

3

Build your own Wood Ant Terrarium (Farm). Step-by-Step instructions including pictures on how to build your own W2 style Ant Terrarium (Farm). Adult supervision and woodworking tools required (I hope to simplify these instructions this year (2003) - MrAnt).

4

Ant Rearing. Another interesting method using a dirtless nest using a plastic shoebox, test tubes, cotton, foam brush, fluon (or light household oil), black paper. Included is a bit of information on food and feeding, water requirements, care, handling, and other concerns (queen, Precautions, Special considerations)

Cams

1

Ant Cast Static Images or Video - Java Only! - Here is The Natural History Museum's Ant Cam on the web. The unfortunate thing is the image part of the site is java based. Hence if you don't have Java you won't be able to see anything.

2

Steve's Ant Farm - Well it seems they actually have a live ant colony but IMHO all one can make out are dots moving around. There is no real information on ants here. They do have a Movie - which I couldn't play on IE5 on win98.. A links page which really is limited - eventually those links will all be available here with comments. A PR scrapbook which shows the site in Wired in 1995 (they were the first)..
